They wrote, “Being in that space surrounded by queer people, surrounded by folks celebrating Puerto Rican Christmas traditions through a queer lens, and seeing person after person walking the runway, doing the categories, it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can be all of this. I can just be Vico and just be all of this, all at the same time.’”

Their family, once again, was there to support them. Ortiz’s dad found them a mustache and fake machete while their mother figured out how to dress up “in the most heroic way possible.”

They felt connected with the people and hence embraced their gender more. Around the same time, they did drag where they could accept and embrace their masculine side.

However, accepting their gender was not always easy. When they began performing and went to acting school, they were forced to “perform gender in a way that they expected gender and that the Latin experience did as well.”

It was not coming from an authentic place, so Ortiz often wondered how they could break free and find themselves again. Eventually, they realized that everything was merely a social construct.

They finally came out and started surrounding themselves with people who knew what gender was and understood the meaning of non-binary and gender non-conformity.

“And seeing them challenged my own expectations of what gender is. Because I was taught to assume before even getting to know someone. And I’d done the same thing to myself,” Ortiz said.

“After that, after coming out, after connecting with “non-binary” as who I am, I felt like I was finally taking a deep breath in and knowing that I deserved this. I deserve to be in these spaces; acting and the many facets of life. I belong in these spaces. And I’m going to take this space,” they admitted.
