Tyler ‘Ninja‘ Blevins is a streaming phenomenon and one of the biggest names in esports. The 32-year-old is the most followed streamer on Twitch, his primary platform, but now multi-streams across various sites after ending his exclusivity deal.

However, he recently disclosed a devastating piece of news – he has been diagnosed with cancer. The gaming icon, known for his incredible skills in battle royale titles, is now facing a different battle.

In this article, we delve into his cancer diagnosis and how he is coping with this challenging situation.

Ninja revealed his cancer diagnosis through a tweet

Blevins sent shockwaves through the streaming community and his massive fanbase on March 26th with a devastating revelation – he has been diagnosed with melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer.

He took to his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to share the news, admitting that he had known about the diagnosis for some time.

The journey to this diagnosis began during a routine checkup with his dermatologist, where a mole on the bottom of his foot raised concerns.

Alright I’m still in a bit of shock but want to keep you all updated. A few weeks ago I went in to a dermatologist for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me. There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful. It… — Ninja (@Ninja)

The mole was promptly removed and sent for testing, which ultimately confirmed the presence of melanoma. His wife, Jessica Blevins, had proactively scheduled this dermatologist appointment.

In his social media post, he expressed his shock, “A few weeks ago, I went in for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me. There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful.”

“It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages.”

However, the ordeal didn’t end there. The doctors discovered another dark spot adjacent to the initial mole, prompting a biopsy in the hopes of confirming that the cancer had been entirely removed. Further testing is now required to determine if the area is indeed noncancerous.

Ninja urged his fans to get regular checkups

In the wake of his shocking melanoma revelation, Belvins didn’t just share his battle; he also took the opportunity to raise awareness and encourage his massive fanbase to prioritize their health.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, he turned his diagnosis into a public service announcement (PSA) for regular skin checkups.

In his social media post, he urged his followers, saying, “Please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.” He recognized that while his melanoma was caught in the early stages, skin cancer can often go unnoticed for years, silently progressing on a patient’s body.

By sharing his personal experience, he aimed to raise awareness about the seriousness of melanoma and the importance of regular screenings.

His call to action resonated deeply with his fanbase. Many of his younger followers admitted to just learning about melanoma through his announcement, prompting them to research the condition and vow to get themselves checked as soon as possible.

As the news of Belvins’ cancer diagnosis spread, the gaming and streaming worlds rallied around him, offering messages of love, encouragement, and well-wishes.

Numerous fellow content creators took to social media to express their support and admiration for his courage in sharing his battle.

It demonstrates his determination to maintain a sense of normalcy and positivity, refusing to let the circumstances define him or deter him from pursuing his passion.

Ninja’s streaming career

Blevins began his professional gaming career in 2009, playing Halo 3 for organizations like Cloud9, Renegades, Team Liquid, and Luminosity Gaming.

His streaming journey started in 2011, initially playing games like H1Z1 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). However, his popularity skyrocketed when he began streaming the newly released Fortnite Battle Royale in late 2017.

His viewership grew exponentially, coinciding with the game’s meteoric rise in popularity, reaching over 2 million followers on Twitch by March 2018. His concurrent viewership records on Twitch were repeatedly broken as he gained more fame.

In March 2018, he became the first streamer to surpass 3 million followers on the platform. He set the record for the largest concurrent audience on an individual stream (outside of tournaments) with 635,000 viewers while playing Fortnite.

In August 2019, he left Twitch to stream exclusively on Microsoft’s Mixer platform, citing limitations on his ability to grow his brand outside of video gaming on Twitch and issues with the platform’s community.

However, after Mixer’s shutdown in July 2020, he was released from his exclusivity deal.

In September 2020, he returned to streaming on Twitch after signing a multi-year exclusive agreement with the platform.

However, in September 2022, he announced a “Time Out” from streaming, hinting at taking a break.

A week later, he announced his return, stating that he would simulcast his content across multiple platforms, including Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, embracing a multi-platform approach.

Know the Truth About Jeff Garlin’s Mouth Surgery — Updated 2026

Published

on

Jeff Garlin — born Jeffrey Todd Garlin on June 5, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois — is one of the most recognizable faces in American comedy. A veteran of The Second City troupe, he rose to national fame as a stand-up comedian before landing his most iconic roles: Murray Goldberg, the gruff but lovable patriarch on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, and Jeff Greene, Larry David’s ever-loyal manager on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Because Garlin has spent decades in the public eye, even the smallest change in his appearance tends not to go unnoticed. And during the 10th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, fans noticed something different — a subtle but persistent change around his mouth that sparked widespread concern and speculation online.

So what exactly happened to Jeff Garlin’s mouth? Here’s everything we know.

What Happened to Jeff Garlin’s Mouth?

When Season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm aired on HBO in early 2020, a noticeable change around Garlin’s mouth became a talking point among fans almost immediately.

One viewer raised the question in a Facebook fan group, writing: “Is it just me, or did it look like Jeff Garlin had a cold sore on the side up his lip for the whole 10th season of Curb?! I thought it wouldn’t bother me, but there it was…every episode!!!!! If it was always there before this season, I never noticed it, or just maybe whatever it was, it got worse and was more noticeable.”

The conversation quickly migrated to Reddit. On a subreddit dedicated to the show, another viewer asked: “Has anyone else noticed the big lump in Jeff Garlin’s mouth (right side)? Does anyone know what it is, and if he’s okay?!”

Dozens of replies flooded in. Some fans speculated about a stroke. Others thought he had bitten the inside of his cheek. One commenter wrote, “I’ve heard after he had a stroke he got some prosthesis or filler put in his mouth and face to stop his cheek from drooping due to paralysis.”

Another added: “He had a stroke like in his 30s… and the previous seasons, he’s never shown that growth on the lower right side of his lip. It’s like he bit it really hard or got punched or something.”

The thread eventually got a more medically grounded response. A Reddit user who identified themselves as a dentist suggested the lump was likely an oral mucocele — a benign cyst caused by one of two related conditions: a mucus extravasation phenomenon (where a salivary duct ruptures and leaks mucus into surrounding tissue) or a mucous retention cyst (where a blocked duct causes mucus to pool). Oral mucoceles are generally harmless but can persist for months and are sometimes treated with minor surgery.

Jeff Garlin’s Oral Surgery: What He Said

About four months before that Reddit thread went viral, Garlin had already quietly confirmed he had oral surgery — though he didn’t elaborate on the specifics.

In November 2019, during a press tour for his Netflix stand-up special Our Man in Chicago, Garlin sat down for an interview with GQ Magazine. The interviewer asked about the beard Garlin was sporting in the special — an unusual look for a comedian who had never grown one before.

Garlin explained that he had recently undergone oral surgery, which left him unable to shave comfortably during the recovery period. Once he got through the itchy early phase, he decided to just keep it. “I said, ‘[expletive] it! Let me see,’” he told GQ, and ended up liking what he saw.

That brief mention confirmed what fans had long suspected: Garlin had a procedure done on his mouth. While he did not specify the nature of the surgery — whether it was to treat an oral mucocele, address another condition, or something else entirely — the timing aligns almost perfectly with the changes viewers noticed on screen.

What Is an Oral Mucocele?

Since a Reddit user first proposed it as a diagnosis, oral mucocele has remained the most widely cited explanation for the visible change in Garlin’s mouth.

An oral mucocele is a small, fluid-filled cyst that typically forms on the inner surface of the lips, cheeks, or floor of the mouth. It develops when a minor salivary gland is disrupted — either by trauma (like accidentally biting your cheek) or by a blocked duct. The cyst is usually painless, soft, and bluish or flesh-colored, and can range from a few millimeters to over a centimeter in diameter.

Mucoceles often resolve on their own, but persistent or larger ones — like the visible lump fans noticed on Garlin across an entire season — are typically removed through a simple outpatient procedure. The surgery involves draining the cyst or excising it along with the associated salivary gland to prevent recurrence.

This fits the timeline: Garlin confirmed an oral surgery in November 2019, and the changes viewers noticed were first visible during Season 10, which filmed around that same period.

Jeff Garlin’s Health: A Broader Picture

The mouth surgery was only one piece of a much larger health story for Garlin over the years.

Earlier in his life, Garlin was diagnosed with Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome, a heart condition that forced him to stop playing sports as a child. It is a relatively manageable condition involving an abnormal electrical pathway in the heart that can cause rapid heartbeat episodes.

More recently, Garlin has been remarkably open about his mental health. In September 2022, he publicly revealed for the first time that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, calling it “a motherf–ker” in an honest Instagram post. He also disclosed that he had experienced suicidal thoughts during a particularly dark period, and that he had worked hard to rebuild — attending therapy up to seven times a week at his lowest point.

In a candid interview with WGN Morning News around the same time, Garlin also revealed that he had suffered a stroke, adding that it took him considerable time to recover. (This detail, notably, also echoes some of the Reddit speculation — fans had theorized that facial changes might be connected to a past stroke, and it turns out that part of the conversation wasn’t entirely wrong, even if the specific mouth change was more likely surgical.)

Jeff Garlin’s Departure from The Goldbergs

While the mouth surgery story was unfolding, Garlin was also navigating significant professional turbulence.

In December 2021, it was announced that Garlin was departing The Goldbergs following multiple HR investigations into allegations of on-set misconduct. The show had been filming its ninth season at the time, and from Episode 15 onward, his character Murray was portrayed through a combination of outtakes, a stand-in, and CGI. In Season 10 — the show’s final season — Murray Goldberg was written out entirely, killed off within the narrative.

Jeff Garlin and Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Final Season

Despite the controversies, Garlin returned to the role he is perhaps most beloved for — Jeff Greene in Curb Your Enthusiasm — for the show’s final season.

Season 12 premiered on HBO and Max on February 4, 2024, and concluded on April 7, 2024, bringing the curtain down on one of television’s most celebrated comedies after a 24-year run. Garlin appeared alongside Larry David, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, J.B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn, and Tracey Ullman for the send-off.

The final season received strong critical reception, earning an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. For longtime fans of the show, seeing Garlin reprise Jeff Greene one last time — lump, beard, and all — felt like a fitting goodbye to a character they had grown to love over more than two decades.

Since the show ended, Garlin and Susie Essman have also launched a podcast called The History of Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which they break down every episode of the HBO series alongside cast, crew, and fans. The podcast ran through early 2025.

Jeff Garlin in 2026: Where Is He Now?

As of 2026, Jeff Garlin is 63 years old and continues to work in stand-up comedy, his first and most enduring creative home. He has spoken publicly about how returning to comedy clubs and live performance helped him through his most difficult personal periods.

While he no longer has a major ongoing television role following the conclusions of The Goldbergs and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Garlin remains active and visible in the comedy world. He has described the end of both shows as a kind of liberation — an opportunity to reconnect with the craft that launched his career in the first place.

The Bottom Line

The change fans noticed in Jeff Garlin’s mouth during Season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm was almost certainly the result of an oral procedure — most likely the treatment of an oral mucocele, a common and benign salivary cyst. Garlin himself confirmed he had oral surgery in a November 2019 GQ interview, though he did not specify the type.

The visible difference was not caused by a stroke (though Garlin has since confirmed he did have a stroke at some point), nor by any cosmetic procedure. It was, in the words of the Reddit dentist who quietly solved the mystery years before anyone knew to ask, simply a mucocele — a treatable, minor condition that happened to be visible on camera across an entire season of one of television’s most closely watched shows.

Jeff Garlin’s fans can rest easy: he is okay — and still performing.
