She stated, “I always say, I have beauty in all my mess. The reality is, I’m married to my grandmother’s second husband, who was my step-grandfather.”
Mary provided further context, explaining that her grandmother had passed away in 1997, leaving behind a vast fortune, numerous businesses, and their family’s Pentecostal megachurch.
However, she revealed a remarkable twist to the family story, sharing that before her grandmother’s passing, she had expressed a unique wish in her last will. Mary recounted her grandmother’s words, saying, “My grandmother told me, for herself, that she wanted me to take her place.”
Additionally, Mary revealed that her grandmother had specifically told her now-husband that if something happened to her, she wanted him to marry one of her granddaughters because she was sure they would stay loyal to him and treat him with the same kindness he had shown her.
The social media personality was initially hesitant to marry Robert Sr., as she found the idea unconventional. However, she ultimately decided to honor her grandmother’s wishes and went through with the marriage when she was in her early 20s while Robert Sr. was in his 40s.

She recounted that on their wedding night, things felt a bit unusual. However, as they got to know each other better, she had an epiphany, saying, “I thought, ‘Wow, my grandmother got it right. If I had to choose a guy, this is the type of person I would pick.”
After learning the story behind their marriage, one of the RHOSLC contestants, Jen Shah, used the opportunity to criticize Mary’s marriage on the show.
She said, “You think she’s a good friend? Well, good luck with that,” to one of the other Housewives, “You’re sticking with Mary? The one with her grandfather? That’s the truth!”
Later, Robert Sr. came to his wife’s defense, stating that he couldn’t comprehend their perspective. He clarified that their relationship was not driven by money.
He went on to say, “I was 22 years old when I married Mama. Whose granddaddy was I? I wasn’t even anybody’s daddy yet. I don’t like Shah’s pejorative all. It’s very offensive for someone to say.”
