What Happened to Maia Campbell? The Downfall of the 90s Star

Maia Campbell, a well-known American actress best known for her role in the series In the House, has made the headlines for the past few years not because of her acting career but rather because of her drug abuse and mental illness.

The actress, who was the daughter of a well-known author and landed her first job at 16, dealt with her problems in front of the largest audiences.

Unfortunately, although she should have been supported and helped, some have used her suffering as fodder, thanks to camera phones, social media, and ignorance.

The 90s star – Maia Campbell’s downfall

1993-1999

In the movie Poetic Justice, which she landed at 16, Campbell played Lucky’s cousin.

Thea, South Central, Beverly Hills, 90210, Moesha, and Sister, Sister were among the numerous 90s classics in which she later appeared as a star.

Her most notable performance, though, was in the 1995 TV series In The House with Debbie Allen and James Todd Smith, famously known as LL Cool J., where she portrayed the role of Tiffany Warren.

1998-2002

In 1998, Campbell wed Elias Gutierrez, and the couple welcomed their daughter Elizabeth Elisha Gutierrez in 2000.

According to Heavy, she was deprived of her daughter’s custody a year after her birth because she refused to seek treatment for her bipolar disease. Over the years, the pair’s daughter was raised by Guiterrez.

2010

However, everything started to fall apart after she stopped receiving treatment for her bipolar disorder, began taking drugs, and was repeatedly arrested.

Internet shocking footage painted Campbell as messy and acting erratically. According to The Huffington Post, in 2010, she was detained for stealing and transported to a California mental health facility under a court order.

She willingly moved into a residential treatment facility to eventually move out independently.

2012

Campbell appealed for assistance on Iyanla: Fix My Life alongside her ex-husband, daughter, and stepfather. The retired actress was motivated to improve and shared heartwarming moments with her loved ones.

2015

When Campbell went to a Burger King, she ended herself in an Atlanta police cruiser. She cursed at a family, claimed their child had stolen her wallet, and called the arresting officer a “[expletive] [expletive],” according to the police report obtained by TMZ.

She was again taken into custody for disorderly conduct at a Riverdale, Georgia, Waffle House. According to Page Six‘s sources, she became intoxicated and ended up in handcuffs after refusing to leave the restaurant.

2017

The video went viral that showed the In The House actress at a petrol station looking unkempt and disheveled while wearing only a bra and underpants.

A man who seemed to be her buddy later revealed to be an Atlanta Rapper T-Hood, recorded the video where Campbell can be seen requesting drugs. “I want some crack,” she noted.

After a video of her requesting drugs at a gas station went viral, LL Cool J posted a plea on Instagram asking for help locating his former co-star.

Sadly, she made it clear that she didn’t want any help in a response video on YouTube, saying, “Hey Todd, look bro I love you. I don’t need help. I just need a benefit concert for mental health. Don’t DM me. I’m good. Don’t call me. I’ll call you.”

Most of the video featured Campbell covering her mouth, and her hair color is much lighter than in the footage from a few days before.

The Thea star continued by saying that she was “doing fine” and that she was the owner of real estate, investments, and the reality program From the Bottom Up.

2020

According to police, the previously brilliant, young star of the 1990s was detained on May 16 as part of an Atlanta street-racing investigation.

Despite the lack of information about the bust, 44 persons were detained, according to The Atlanta Constitution-Journal.

2022

The former actress’ whereabouts and what she does today are unknown. Her last Instagram post was made in late November 2020, and she hasn’t updated any of her other social media accounts since then.

Campbell turned 46 this year, as she was born on November 26, 1976.

Halle Bailey’s Parents Are Her Biggest Cheerleaders

Halle Bailey is an American performer who is both a singer-songwriter and an actress. She gained recognition as one part of the musical duo Chloe x Halle alongside her sister Chloe Bailey.

Their albums ‘The Kids Are Alright’ and ‘Ungodly Hour’ were well-received, and they have received a total of five Grammy Award nominations.

In the field of acting, Halle has appeared in a supporting capacity in the TV sitcom Grown-ish. In 2023, she took on her first leading role as Ariel in Disney’s musical fantasy film The Little Mermaid, released on May 26.

Since the new Disney live-action movie The Little Mermaid blew up on the internet, fans are more willing to learn about her family and life. So here are some details. Read for more.

Halle Bailey’s parents are the biggest cheerleaders of their daughters

Halle, born on March 27, 2000, grew up in Mableton, Georgia. She is the daughter of Courtney and Doug Bailey. Chloe’s father hails from Charleston, South California, while their mother is from Burke, Virginia.

Her parents are both African American. Although Halle’s parents pursued careers outside the entertainment industry, they actively nurtured their daughters’ talents.

As Halle and her sister’s fame grew, their father, a former stockbroker, transitioned into becoming their full-time manager.

He imparted valuable knowledge to them, including the foundations of songwriting and the intricacies of participating in business meetings and securing deals, as mentioned by Amomama.

In mid-2012, the family relocated to Los Angeles together. During their childhood, Halle and her sister Chloe developed a passion for songwriting and taught themselves to play musical instruments by watching tutorials on YouTube.

As their biggest cheerleaders, their parents encouraged them to be independent and self-sufficient in their pursuits. However, not much of their personal information is available.

She was raised alongside her older sisters Ski Bailey who was born April 20, 1991, and Chloe Bailey, who was born July 1, 1998, as well as her younger brother Branson Bailey who was born October 3, 2005.

The two sisters Chloe x Halle, have gained recognition for their exceptional musical abilities and powerful vocals. Their breakthrough came in 2013 when they caught the attention of Beyoncé, who discovered them through their YouTube covers.

Since then, Chloe and Halle have earned five Grammy nominations and garnered praise from influential figures such as Michelle Obama, an avid supporter.

The duo released their debut album in 2018 and followed it up with a second one in 2020. There is not much information available about her other siblings.

Halle Bailey also sang the songs for ‘The Little Mermaid’

Disney announced on July 3, 2019, revealing that Halle had been chosen to portray Princess Ariel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid

The film is set to be directed by Rob Marshall, and Halle will also be responsible for recording and performing the movie’s soundtrack.

Director Rob Marshall expressed his confidence in Bailey, stating that her combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, substance, and remarkable singing voice made her the perfect fit for the iconic role.

However, the casting of her as Ariel sparked controversy, with some individuals arguing that selecting an African-American actress for the role deviated from the original character.

In response, Disney issued an open letter defending their casting decision. Jodi Benson, the original voice actress for Ariel, also supported Bailey’s casting, emphasizing the importance of storytelling and the character’s spirit over external characteristics.
