Some people get famous for their works, whereas some get fame through their relationships with renowned people. The latter is the case for Lilian Matsuda, who is a marketing manager from the United States but is best known as Nick Gehlfuss‘ wife.

Gehlfuss is an American actor best known for his roles in the Chicago franchise series Chicago Med as Dr. Will Halstead and in Shameless as Robbie Pratt.

As for Gehlfuss and Matsuda’s relationship, they officially began dating in 2013. As time passed, their bond became stronger, and after two years of dating, they decided to take a further step in their relationship and got engaged.

Being content with their relationship, they decided to unify around one year after getting engaged. They married on May 13, 2016, in a private but lavish ceremony held in Ohio. They took two days to enjoy their marriage and only posted about it on May 15.

Later, on May 17, the couple finally went public, revealing a few details about their wedding to People magazine. He stated that he wanted to invite his cast members but would also have had to invite the entire Chicago franchise.

He stated, “I wanted to invite a lot of my cast mates, but because we’re a franchise, I would have had to invite the entire Chicago franchise. I started on P.D., and I went to Fire, and now with Justice, it would have been crazy.”

He continued, “It rained that day in the morning, which is good luck. And then it was perfect after that. And it was on Friday the 13th, and the next day it dropped twenty degrees, and then Sunday, blizzard, snowing on the way here.”

As he went on, he also talked a bit about their honeymoon. He said that their honeymoon was supposed to be abroad, but they spent the first few days promoting his show. And as Matsuda is half-Japanese on her father’s side, Japan was one of their planned destinations.

“Besides the one we’re having right now, we’re going to go to Japan probably at some point,” Gehlfuss added. As of December 2024, the happily married couple has been in a marital relationship for more than seven years.

Since their wedding, Matsuda and Gehlfuss’s relationship has only gotten stronger. And what connects them more, besides their eternal love for each other, is their mutual passion for philanthropy and advocacy work.

Matsuda has been a passionate advocate for many things. Her Instagram handle even has a call to action option that redirects to different causes and movements, including Stop Asian Hate and Black Lives Matter.

Her husband has also been advocating for various anti-hate campaigns and raising awareness for violence against women. For instance, on March 20, 2021, he had reposted an Instagram post initially made by his spouse, where he openly advocated the Stop Asian Hate campaign.

In the reposted Instagram post, he added a short caption of his own as he wrote, “Proud to repost on behalf of my spectacular Japanese American wife, Lilian Matsuda. Within it is part of her story. Please read.”

Moreover, their bond has also been made stronger through their understanding of each other’s professional work. And Matsuda has been excellent on that part, as she recently revealed that she agreed to move to the country so that her husband could be on Chicago Med.

On Thursday, May 25, 2023, Matsuda shared a series of pictures of Gehlfuss from the sets of Chicago Med and wrote a heartfelt caption where she first congratulated her life partner and then expressed how proud she is of him.

“Congrats to you. We moved across the country for this job eight years ago, and it has been a wild ride. You work so hard. I’m so proud of you. Thank you for being you. Love you so much @nickgehlfuss,” she wrote in her caption.

Apart from being a happy couple, Gehlfuss and Matsuda are also proud parents of two babies. However, the details about their kids, such as the baby’s name and baby’s gender, are yet to be revealed by the married couple.

Matsuda first made her pregnancy announcement via her Instagram handle on April 14, 2021. She posted a mirror selfie, proudly showing off her baby bump and tagging her husband. “Dose 1 and we’ve been feeling great,” she captioned her post.

The couple marked their 5th wedding anniversary on May 14, 2021, when Matsuda shared a picture of herself and Gehlfuss standing together at a wooden bridge, with Matsuda’s baby bump visible. She wrote, “Happy weekend from us three and this here bridge #fiveyears.”

More pictures of Matsuda flaunting her baby bump were shared by her via her Instagram handle. Later, on June 13, 2021, she uploaded a few photos from a live Columbus Symphony concert she and her spouse attended and addressed their soon-to-be-born baby in the caption.

She wrote, “Dear Bebe, you will be very loved by this family. Hope you enjoyed your first live concert. thanks, fam, for making this a great weekend.”

After that, there were no further updates about the duo’s baby until December 14, 2021, when she made another Instagram post, subtly announcing she had given birth to her and Gehlfuss’ first child.

Through the same post, she also paid tribute to her late mother and mentioned how much she and her baby missed her at Christmas. Matsuda wrote, “I believe my baby would laugh if you laughed. I’ll do my best to be as patient as you were.”

As they attended a few red-carpet events together in January 2022, the couple only had a brief break from their newborn. Matsuda even mentioned parents’ night out in a few of his posts.

She also featured her first baby during the 2023 Mother’s Day on May 15, 2023.

On that day, she posted a picture of her baby resting in Gehlfuss’ chest and wrote a lengthy caption. She first wrote, “Happy belated Mother’s Day to those who are missing mamas no longer with us. The day kinda sucks, but we get through it.”

“Or maybe your relationship with your mom is a hard one, and this day is still kinda weird. Some of us are still celebrating our survival of postpartum depression without breaking all the glass in our house,” she added.

Moreover, the couple welcomed their second child in March 2024. Lilian Matsuda shared pictures of the new baby in August 2024, writing, “Four months ago our family got a little bigger…and the love keeps growing.”

Gehlfuss is a well-known artist from the United States. In 2014, he appeared in Shameless as the character Robbie Pratt, which helped propel him to fame.

Moreover, the actor first appeared in the police procedural drama Chicago P.D. and then in the drama Chicago Fire’s backdoor pilot for Chicago Med.

His industry career is gradually but steadily improving over time. He was cast as Dr. Will Halastead in the National Broadcasting Company’s Chicago Med in 2015.

Baby Reindeer was a great hit for Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the Netflix series.

The British black comedy drama-thriller was adapted from Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show and hit the streaming service on April 11, 2024. The 7-episode drama, produced by  Clerkenwell Films, was an instant hit and grabbed the attention of millions worldwide.

As Baby Reindeer was based on Gadd’s real-life events, viewers were instantly accustomed to digging deeper into the happenings of the series, mainly relationships. As if that wasn’t enough, his professional conduct was also questioned.

Days after Baby Reindeer hit Netflix, on April 16, 2024, a transgender actress named Reece Lyons came forward on X, claiming she and Gadd dated for a brief period and that she also auditioned for the role of Gadd’s ex-girlfriend, Teresa “Teri,” in the Netflix series.

Lyons never specifically mentioned Gadd or Baby Reindeer in her X thread but an investigation by Deadline confirmed that she was indeed talking about the Netflix show and its creator.

In her X thread, Lyons mentioned that she didn’t believe she was a victim of abuse but acknowledged that Gadd hurt her even if there was no conscious intent to do so. Additionally, she was hurt by Gadd “conflating a work opportunity with a dating dynamic.”

As per Deadline, Gadd and Lyons first met each other in October 2021. Both of them were in the bar of London’s Bush Theatre after Lyons had performed the one-woman show Overflow.

“I had met him in the bar after one of my shows. He was with a friend; they both approached me after my performance to congratulate me, and that’s when he offered to buy me a drink,” Lyons recalled her first encounter with Gadd on her X thread.

She then stated that she initially thought of declining the offer as she didn’t know Gadd but before she could decline the offer, she recognized him. She claimed that Gadd had followed her on Instagram a month earlier.

It was at that moment she realized that this wasn’t a normal chance encounter. She decided to accept his offer for a drink, after which they began their conversation. “We split off from his friend, and he began to tell me about his upcoming Netflix show that he had written,” she wrote.

Lyons continued her X thread by writing that Gadd had offered her the role of his ex-girlfriend, a trans woman. As per Lyons, Gadd mentioned that he allegedly didn’t treat his now-former girlfriend the best.

When Gadd offered the role, Lyons claimed she was interested in auditioning for the role and told him to contact her agent. Right after that, Gadd allegedly expressed his romantic feelings for Lyons.

Weeks after their first meet, Gadd contacted Lyons and asked her out on a date. She agreed even though she was mindful of the overlap between the romantic invitation and the upcoming audition. During their date, their conversations didn’t turn out well.

After a week, Lyons texted him and ended things prematurely. She told him that she didn’t think the conflation of the upcoming audition for Baby Reindeer and dating each other at the same time was very wise, and Gadd replied that he understood what she meant.

However, things didn’t end then and there between the two, as Lyons claimed that Gadd spontaneously called her two weeks later and expressed his desire to try dating again. When he said that, she felt conflicted as she had previously set clear boundaries and he appeared to understand them.

“‘What if I say, no?’ I asked myself. ‘Does that mean he would feel slighted, and I wouldn’t get the chance to audition?’ I decided to say yes and quickly found myself pulled back into his emotional chaos again,” Lyons wrote on her X thread.

As per Deadline, Gadd and Lyons had gone on four dates between October and November 2021, before the former decided to end things permanently in December of the same year. As per sources close to Gadd, some conversations about a Baby Reindeer audition might have taken place while the two were dating.

In March 2022, three months after Gadd and Lyons broke up, the latter auditioned for the role of Teresa “Teri” and submitted her self-tape to Nina Gold Casting. However, she wasn’t offered the role and it ultimately went to Mexican actress Nava Mau.

Deadline reported in May 2024 that Gadd had no control over the casting process on Baby Reindeer but provided some feedback on audition tapes to Clerkenwell Films. Likewise, Gadd and Lyons seemingly had a final conversation after the actress for the role of Teresa “Teri” was finalized.

As per Lyons’ X thread, Gadd reportedly consoled her over the phone and mentioned that her audition was exceptional. “But it’s out of my hands. Netflix is looking for somebody who’s already a star,” Gadd reportedly told Lyons.

Sources close to Gadd stated that Lyons was the one who asked him for feedback on her audition on the day of rejection. She then asked him, “But what about us?” to which he replied, “It’s not going to work. You’re too confrontational for me.” “And that was it,” she concluded.

After Lyons went public with her relationship with Gadd, Baby Reindeer’s producer Clerkenwell Films launched an investigation into Lyons’ comments. This investigation revealed that Gadd had not disclosed his romantic liaison with Lyons to Clerkenwell Films.

During the investigation process, Lyons was neither interviewed on the phone nor in person, as Clerkenwell Films believed that her X thread, along with other evidence, was enough. Clerkenwell Films ultimately concluded that Gadd behaved professionally and casting decisions were not compromised.
