The pair celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary on July 2, 2022. He posted a cute picture with his wife from their wedding day on Instagram and wrote, “Happy 4th anniversary darling.”

Paul, whose life has been plagued by addiction, has lost an astounding £7 million to gambling over the past 30 years.

The former England and Arsenal striker has won league titles, European crowns, and World Cup matches, but he has been engaged in a totally different conflict off the field.

“Gambling is the killer. I know one thing and one thing only. It ain’t going away. That’s the scary thing,” he remarked in a BBC documentary Paul Merson: Football, Gambling & Me.

The former footballer revealed that although he had struggled with addictions to alcohol and cocaine, gambling was by far the most damaging.

According to the documentary, his wife Kate is now in charge of their finances, and she is required to provide him with a limited allowance that he can only use for petrol and essential shopping.

Paul was upset but has since come to terms with it because he didn’t carry a wallet and had a block on his phone to prevent mobile gambling.

A closer look at Paul Merson’s previous marriages

Paul was married twice before tying the knot with his current wife. After ten years, his first marriage to Lorraine Costin fell apart as he battled alcoholism and drug addiction.

After only three years of reaffirming their marriage, Merson’s addictions to alcohol, drugs, and gambling caused their divorce in 2000.

Later, he wed Louise, his second wife. However, they divorced in 2013 without disclosing the reason for the breakup to the public.

His second marriage to Louise produced twin girls, Maisie and Mollie. His present union with Kate has welcomed three children.

Paul Merson’s early career explored

On March 9, 2006, Paul made the announcement that he was ending his playing career and departing the sport, but not without leaving his legacy.

He played with Arsenal from 1985 until 1997 when he twice won the First Division, or what is now known as the Premier League.

Despite establishing his footing on the field, his career was jeopardized in November 1994 when he admitted to having gambling, drug, and alcohol addictions.

The Football Association gave Paul a three-month rehabilitation program, and he rejoined the team in February 1995. He appeared 423 times for the Gunners and scored 99 goals during that time.

Additionally, the athlete played for Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Tamworth, and Walsall, where he rose to the position of player-manager.

Paul played 21 times for England, including during the historic penalty shootout that saw England lose to Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
