His father was the one who gave him a push to be a DJ. “He always told me it was an interesting way to think,” Sulta reminisced. “He made the comparison between maths, language, and music, between the way you learn all three.”
After he left university, Sulta battled with depression. He said, “I wasn’t very happy with what I was doing, I was unsure, I was frustrated, and at the same time I had this sense of entitlement: I felt that my problems were so important, and I resented my upbringing – all the young, middle-class insecurities.”

During that time, he was also taking a lot of drugs. He was spending his money on staying alive but did not know how to deal with his emotions or talk about them.
“My mother and father were nothing but supportive, but as a young man, you feel it’s just you against the world. I was in an institution for people with mental health issues… it’s a period of my life that I don’t tend to talk about,” he added.
On his twenty-first birthday, his friend took him to the theater to see a show. There, he had an epiphany and realized that not everything had to be against him and his liking.
He had learned Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which bettered him, and he decided to be the opposite of what he used to be. He said, “I was making music as Atlus – it was angry, it was pissed off, and ‘Atlus’ backward is ‘Sulta.'”
“I needed something to go with it; ‘Denis’ sprung to mind, and that had a ring. I wanted to make music with a different sonic aesthetic, and a character to accompany it,” he added.
And hence came the name Denis Sulta. Currently, he identifies with his performance name and often draws massive audiences to clubs and festivals like Reading and Leeds.
