Lanipekun is a British actor who was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before leaving to star in the BBC show Spooks as journalist-turned-spy Ben Kaplan.
Lanipekun was born in London during the Brixton riots of 1981. His father is from Nigeria, while his mother is half Italian and half English.
His parents divorced when he was four, and he relocated from Brixton to Finsbury Park with his family. He was raised in North London as an only kid by his single mother, a secondary school music teacher.
He went to Crowland Junior School, St Aidan’s Primary School, and Rokesly Junior School before being awarded a financial scholarship to Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, West Sussex.
He went on to Westminster College. Lanipekun studied English, Psychology, History, Drama, and Religious Studies at A-Level. He then received funding to pursue a BSc in Anthropology at University College London.
He was a Grant Student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after graduating from university. Many Arts Charities and Foundations, like The Actors’ Charitable Trust, helped him financially.
Lanipekun auditioned for the National Youth Music Theatre at the age of thirteen and was accepted, later portraying the role of Leroy The Boxer in the musical adaption of the film Bugsy Malone. He auditioned for the National Youth Theatre at the age of seventeen and was accepted.
That was the first time he truly contemplated acting as a career.
Lanipekun was a member of the MOBO-nominated Hip-Hop Collective ‘ONE’. Originally made up of members from three distinct groups: his own, with producer Al Shux, and two others made up of pals from the local secondary schools, Highgate Wood, St David’s, and St Katherine’s.
The group included rappers Pyrelli, Artcha, Sway, and Mr. Ti2bs, as well as 12 MCs and Producers. In 2001, ONE released their sole album, Onederful World.
To coincide with its release, they established their own label, and Lanipekun acquired distribution through the label CARGO. ONE was nominated for a MOBO Award after reaching the finals of the Unsung Competition for independent musicians.
While they were not the eventual winners, the group’s status in the music business had grown, and they began to receive playing on major British radio stations.
Lanipekun was also a freelance journalist at the time. When he first joined the Sony Street Team under Dj Semtex, he was offered the opportunity to write for their promotional website and, later, for their magazine.
He authored reviews and advertorials, as well as conducted interviews with many of the Urban Division’s Artists. Lanipekun began freelancing more widely and was appointed as the Entertainment Editor for Alexander Amosu’s online magazine ‘ICON’, where he worked for eighteen months.
Lanipekun was cast in his first professional acting job after a casting director was recommended by a school classmate and actor Leo Gregory. Years later, he attended Drama School but dropped out after getting cast in Spooks.
The part was his first audition, and after four rounds of meetings, Kudos executives opted to cast him. He earned the coveted Carleton Hobbs Award in 2007 and joined the BBC Radio Drama Rep.
He has appeared in almost fifty radio drama projects to date. After finishing his second season on Spooks, he portrayed Ashley in Apples & Oranges for Channel 4 opposite Nathan Stewart-Jarret in 2008.
In 2012, he returned to the series as Ashley in New Cross, partnering Russell Tovey. Lanipekun also appeared as Eric the Red in Tarrell McCraney’s Wig Out!, directed by Dominic Cooke, at the Royal Court Theatre in 2008.
Lanipekun co-starred alongside Jonathan Pryce in Dimetos, directed by Douglas Hodge, at the Donmar Warehouse in 2009. The play garnered mixed reviews. Then Lanipekun appeared as Tiger, a Jamaican personal trainer, in Season 2 of Jonathan Harvey’s sitcom Beautiful People.
He appeared in the first double episode of Series 2 of BBC’s Being Human, portraying the role of Saul. He then appeared in the movies Clash of the Titans and Blitz.
Lanipekun returned to television in Series 1 of Death in Paradise, starring Ben Miller and Sara Martins, and as Mohammed in the Showtime/Sky Atlantic series The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons. He then appeared in the films Twenty8k, in which he co-starred with Parminder Nagra, Kirsten Wearing, Jonas Armstrong, and Stephen Dillane, and Dead Europe, in which he co-starred with Ewan Leslie.
The actor shot Way To Go for BBC3 in the autumn of 2012, as well as the regular part of Steve for Comedy Central’s new comedy Big Bad World, with Blake Harrison, Caroline Quentin, and James Fleet.
In 2013, Alex appeared as a guest star in Channel 4’s comedy series London Irish, and then as Michael in Bafta Award-winning Writer/Director Debbie Tucker Green’s debut movie, Second Coming, opposite Idris Elba.
