As said before, Waters is very secretive about his dating history and personal life. 

He is an openly gay man, as a result, he does not have a wife or is married to a woman. Similarly, there is no news of him having any children.

Mondo Trasho was Waters’s debut feature picture, released in 1969, and was followed by Multiple Maniacs in 1970. The first film in his Trash Trilogy, Pink Flamingos, was released in 1972, and he completed the trilogy with 1974’s Female Trouble and 1977’s Desperate Living.

Waters delegated cinematography for the first time with Polyester, hiring film student David Insley as the principal camera operator. In 1988, John published the comedy Hairspray, which was transformed into a 2002 Broadway musical that won eight Tony Awards. 

Waters was a co-producer and consultant on the 2007 film adaptation of the musical. He also appears in both films, as Dr. Fredrickson in the original and as a Flasher in the 2007 remake. Cry-Baby, John’s follow-up to Hairspray, became a Broadway musical in 1990 and was nominated for four Tony Awards in 2008.

Waters directed Serial Mom in 1994, starring Kathleen Turner, Sam Waterston, Ricki Lake, and Matthew Lillard, and made an uncredited appearance as Ted Bundy. Waters again appeared as ‘Pervert on Phone’ in his following film, Pecker, released in 1998. 

Waters wrote, directed, and starred in the 2000 black comedy Cecil B. Demented as a reporter. In 2004, he wrote A Dirty Shame, which stars Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, Selma Blair, and Chris Isaak. 

In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Waters was asked why he hadn’t created another picture since A Dirty Shame, to which he replied, “It didn’t make any money.”

He said, “It didn’t make any money. They want you to make independent films for half a million bucks, and for me, a film would cost around $5m. It’s a great time to be a first-time filmmaker, but not me.”
