“Based on the extraordinary novel, which is very special to me, it follows Marie as she grows up in Nazi-occupied France — an intricate story of hope, forgiveness, power, and resilience,” she added. She followed this tweet with five more tweets about the show and its importance to her.

Later, in a Netflix featurette, director Levy talked about how Loberti went on to be cast as Marie. He mentioned that he wanted to cast Marie with a blind young woman and to have Marie played by someone who understands what it is like to walk that road. He added:

“That is valuable detail and nuance that impacts and informs every frame of this series. Thus began a global casting search. We got thousands of videos, one of them is a unicorn of a discovery: She’s never auditioned, she’s never thought about being an actress, she’s an academic.”

Likewise, in her interview with Netflix, Loberti talked about the importance of her character that has been brought on-screen and how she hopes that the miniseries will smash stereotypes around blind people and blindness.

She stated, “I hope people will come to truly understand that this is a representation of a way someone lives their life that is not by choice, but by circumstance. This story isn’t about being blind — it’s about humanity coming together in a time of hardship.”

“Blindness is the last thing on Marie-Laure’s mind, and it’s probably the least relevant part of her identity, but it is the way she explores and feels the world around her,” Loberti concluded the statement.

To sum up, Levy got what he wanted — an actress who could understand the character of Marie and portray it perfectly. And Loberti is now breaking stereotypes and garnering fame for her fantastic performance.
