Was Harper Lee Gay? About Her Sexuality and Partner
She never talked about her sexuality.
Harper Lee was an American author whose 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and became a modern American literary classic.
She died on February 19, 2016, and the entire world mourned for her. To her fans and followers, she left an unanswered question that people frequently wondered when she was alive — Was Harper Lee gay?
Lee’s sexuality was always up for a question. This was because she never got married and did not have any children.
Moreover, she never talked about her sexuality and never revealed if she had a partner or not as well. It seemed like Lee intended to keep her sexuality concealed from the public, but her secrecy and anger with the issue just fueled the intrigue of her fans and followers.
As a result, many wondered about it and the answer to the question, Was Harper Lee gay?, died with her. That being said, there is a lot of speculation about her sexuality, and here is all we know about it.
Was Harper Lee gay?
As said before, it is unknown if Lee is gay or not. While the author never addressed it, her biography hints as such.
Various biographies have been written about her. Some of them include Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields, The Mockingbird Next Door: Life With Harper Lee by Marja Mills, and Up Close: Harper Lee by Kerry Madden.
Mills avoided the topic of Lee’s sexuality and her having a partner in her book. The Washington Post reviewed the biography and revealed that Mills asked Lee’s sisters about the author’s sexuality.
“In Nelle’s annoyance at speculation about whether she is gay, Mills screws up her nerve to ask each sister, neither of whom married or had children, whether the other ever dated,” the wrote, “’A little,’ they said. Mills concludes, ‘And that was that.’”
The public believed that Lee belonged to the LGBTQ community. The question “Is Harper Lee Gay or Straight?” still exists on the website VIPFAQ, claiming, “Many people enjoy sharing rumors about the sexuality and sexual orientation of celebrities. We don’t know for a fact whether Harper Lee is gay, bisexual, or straight. However, feel free to tell us what you think.”
The public shared their opinion. The result was that 77% of respondents felt Lee was gay, 14% thought she was straight, and 9% thought she was bisexual.

Lee’s close friend Tom Butts, a Methodist minister, has also given his opinion on Lee’s sexuality. He compared the author with Scout, the protagonist of To Kill a Mockingbird.
He said, “Scout was a tomboy, and so was she, and she kind of kept that almost masculine way about her as an adult. … I don’t think I’ve seen her wear a piece of jewelry as long as I’ve known her except something simple for an appearance. She doesn’t wear makeup, hardly. You know how she dresses. Always pants and kind of baggy clothes sometimes.”
And if Lee is to be judged by the company she maintained, her childhood friend Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was openly gay and inspired the fictitious character Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird.
According to Ed Walsh, Lee told him that she was not gay. After her death, he wrote in The Bay Area Reporter how he wrote to the author in September 2009, asking about her sexuality with regard to an LGBT travel article he was writing.
On September 21, 2009, less than a week after he wrote to Lee, she responded, “Dear Mr. Walsh: I am not even remotely gay. Harper Lee.”
All in all, there is no trace of her romantic interests or partner because she did not keep journals or write love letters. It is reported that Lee had an unrequited infatuation with her married literary agent, Maurice Crain, who urged her to write a novel after reading many of her short pieces.
However, there is no confirmation on that matter.
Harper Lee’s biography
On April 28, 1926, Lee was born as Nelle Harper Lee, the youngest of four children to Amasa and Frances. She was raised in Monroeville, a tiny community in southwest Alabama.
Her father was a lawyer who served in the state assembly from 1926 until 1938. Lee was a tomboy as a youngster, as well as an avid reader.
After attending public school in Monroeville, she attended Huntingdon College, a private institution for women in Montgomery, for a year before transferring to the University of Alabama. After graduating, Lee attended Oxford University.
She returned to the University of Alabama to pursue law but withdrew six months before graduation. She relocated to New York in 1949 and worked as a reservation clerk for Eastern Airlines and British Overseas Airways.
While in New York, she authored many articles and short tales, but none of them were published. Her agency pushed her to turn one short tale into a novel.
Lee abandoned her job to complete it, with the help of friends who believed in her work. In 1957, she sent the work to J. B. Lippincott Company.
Although editors thought the work was too episodic, they recognized the potential in the novel and pushed Lee to redo it. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, with support from Lippincott editor Tay Hohoff.
To Kill a Mockingbird was an instant popular triumph. A year after its publication, the work had sold 500,000 copies and been translated into ten languages.
Critical reception to the novel was mixed. After the film adaptation’s popularity in 1962, critics reconsidered To Kill a Mockingbird.
To Kill a Mockingbird received several prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961, and was adapted into a film in 1962 starring Gregory Peck. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture.
Following the best-seller, Lee released the sequel, Go Set a Watchman. Initially, Go Set a Watchman was the first draft of To Kill A Mockingbird but was released as a sequel in 2015.
Despite the fact that she has never written another work of fiction, these two novels have left an indelible impression on subsequent generations of readers.
Before her death, Lee splits her time between New York and her birthplace of Monroeville, Alabama, where her sister Alice practiced law. Lee, 89, died in her sleep on the morning of February 19, 2016.
On February 20, her funeral was at the Monroeville’s First United Methodist Church. The service was attended by close relatives and friends, and Wayne Flynt delivered the eulogy.

Britnee Kellogg is a talented country music singer who gained fame due to her appearance in seasons 11 and 12 of American Idol. Recently, she released the music video for ‘She’s Come a Long Way,’ which not only has good music but also good lyrics and a powerful message.
She premiered the music exclusively through People’s magazine and the music video included powerful women from her home state of Oregon who have made their way through extreme challenges.
Kellogg collaborated with Autumn McEntire on this song, who ironically turned out to be the niece of the person she idolizes the most. In a recent interview with People, she mentioned, “Reba McEntire is the love of my life. She’s the first cassette tape I ever owned. She has always been a huge inspiration for me musically.”
It was like fate that she met Autumn a few years back and got to work with her. “When I first met her several years ago, I knew her last name was McEntire, but that’s kind of a common last name,” says Kellogg.
She continues the conversation by saying, “I guess I never asked her until she posted something about having a cut on her aunt’s record and I was like, ‘Excuse me, you never told me this?!’ It made me respect her even more that she doesn’t go around bragging that she’s Reba’s niece. I think that says a lot about her character.”

The music video for ‘She’s Come a Long Way’ started with a woman introducing herself as 44-year-old Alexis, who is currently a senior director of Accounting. She also revealed that she’s a mother of 5 children and a breast cancer survivor.
The video then went on to introduce other powerful women, like 30-year-old Erica, a nurse who is in high demand. Then, Nikki was introduced, a 49-year-old layout engineer who survived a life-changing injury.

Other women included were 26-year-old business advisor and artist Kayla and 46-year-old Midwife Megan, who has delivered 500+ babies and has been clean and sober for 17 years. Next came Lisa, who is a special education teacher and a teen mother, followed by 37-year-old Mikeisha, who is a personal shopper, boutique owner, healthcare leader, and a wife and a mother.
The video also included 52-year-old Tracie, who is a property manager, and Slumberkins founders Kelly and Callie. The last person to be introduced was Angela, the co-founder of I Am Foster Kid.
Kellogg created this music video to honor how they’ve come a long way and still have much to do. She wanted to leave a very powerful message so that every woman is inspired by what they are doing.

Since the song was released on YouTube, it has garnered more than 5k views in a week, with 500+ likes. Although the video has not garnered many comments on the platform, her Instagram post is filled with congratulatory posts and positive reviews.
On March 28, Kellogg posted a video reacting to the People’s cover of her new music video, captioning it with “Thank you @people and @triciadespres for highlighting this song and these amazing women”
Under this post, there were many fan comments, where one commented, “CONGRATULATIONS! 🥹 call such a beautiful tribute!! Forever so proud of you! Keep blazing that trail mama!!!! ❤.” Similarly, another fan wrote, “Wow!!! I loved the video. It’s so beautiful and supportive. You looked amazing too. I don’t know I feel like I would love that just to keep the name going and have that massive family line in hopefully WWE. At the same time, I also know what goes into this profession how hard it is, and how taxing it is on your body and your mind and I don’t know if I want that for my kids or not. Like I do but I don’t. It’s so amazing on the other side of things but it also takes a lot outta you. But I guess we’ll see down the line.”

Does he find it difficult to cope with? Is it motivating for him? Does he embrace it?”
To this, the wrestler replied, “He loves it. He doesn’t make him feel a certain negative sort of way. He’s happy for me and he also knows how far I can go in this company and how far his limitations are as well.”

While discussing it, she also discussed the reality of wrestling being male-dominated and acknowledged the limited opportunities for women in the sport. “So if you show you’re different and connect with the crowd in a certain way, you’re gonna skyrocket to the top,” she says.
Ripley then talked about her husband, stating, “Whereas for him, he has been in the WWE, he’s been wrestling for over 10 years, maybe 15 years… for a long long time. At the end of the day, the platform that I’m on is higher and I feel like he doesn’t get threatened by that.”
The wrestler also said that her fiancée reassures her that he doesn’t get threatened by her popularity and she trusts him. She also reveals that he helps her grow along the way and it is what a relationship should be like.
Who is Rhea Ripley’s fiancée, Matthew Adams?
Adams goes by his ring name, Buddy Matthews, and is a professional wrestler currently signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He was previously in WWE as Buddy Murphy and assigned to developmental territory NXT.
He made his debut in AEW on the February 23, 2022, episode of Dynamite alongside Malakai Black and Brody King of the House of Black. Following his impactful debut, AEW president Tony Khan announced his signing with the company.
Some of his notable victories include winning a trios match at Revolution’s buy-in-show against Death Triangle on March 5, 2023, defeating The Elite. However, they experienced defeat in August 2023 against The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn.
