American musician Buck Johnson released his first solo album, Enjoying the Ride, in 2016. Since its release, many have been waiting for the musician to release a new album.
Good news for the fans: he will release his second album, Tongue and Groove, in September. He talked about the release in an exclusive interview with People.
In the interview, Johnson revealed that the album was named after a song inspired by his late father. “I wrote a song not specifically about him, but something he’d always said to me,’’ he said while talking to People.
The title song came from something his father used to say. When his family lived outside of Birmingham in a town named Shady Grove, they lived in an old home that his father helped rebuild.
Whenever there were tornado warnings, Johnson’s father always said, “‘Son, you don’t need to worry. This house is built tongue and groove. It’ll stand any storm.” These words stayed with him until now, which became the inspiration for his upcoming song.
The upcoming album is set to be released in September and will consist of 9 songs. Although the title song was inspired by his father’s words, that was not originally the plan, as per Johnson.
“But that’s the thing about music,” says Johnson. “Music can be therapy if you allow it to be.”
Buck Johnson’s father introduced him to rock music
Johnson’s late father was the reason he got interested in rock music in the first place. On August 20, 2023, he recalled a very special memory of his father through his official Instagram post.

With a childhood picture of him with his father, he wrote, “As a kid, Buck’s dad gave him The Beatles album “Help!” after winning it at a Woolworth’s department store door prize. This was his first real exposure to rock music. Some older cousins turned him on to heavier stuff, like Led Zeppelin and Johnson, who were blown away by Roger Daltrey’s vocals on The Who’s “Who’s Next” LP. “That changed things for me,” Buck says. “I realized I was a rocker at heart.”
Johnson talked about his father very proudly but did not reveal further details about him. As such, there is no internet information about his parents and siblings.
As per reports, he started singing alongside his family at a very young age and sang gospel music throughout the South. His family is one of his biggest supporters and seems to have interested him in music.
Buck Johnson’s second family
Johnson was pursuing his education at the Birmingham-Southern College when he met Kym and fell in love with her. The pair started dating and relocated to Los Angeles, California together.
The couple married on September 5, 1992, in the presence of close friends and family. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 2022, and Johnson took the news to Instagram to share it with his fans.
Alongside a series of lovely pictures of the couple, he wrote, “Celebrating our 30th Anniversary! On September 5, 1992, I was lucky enough to marry my best friend, lover, and soul mate. It’s been an amazing, fun, and wild ride so far. The next 30 will be even better! @missalabama87 #30thanniversary”
Kym is a certified music teacher and the center director of Music City Music Together Inc. According to her company’s official website, she has been teaching music for 22 years and has a musical theater degree from Birmingham Southern College in Alabama.
Furthermore, she also represented the state of Alabama in the 1987 Miss America pageant. After moving to LA with her now husband, she did various odd jobs like voice-over works and commercials to make ends meet.
Kym instantly found music to be her calling and founded Music Together, where more than 1500 families have now participated in her classes. Her company, Music City Music Together, has been established for more than 17 years now.
Buck Johnson’s Musical History
After Johnson relocated to Los Angeles, he started touring and recording music with big names like The Doobie Brothers, Shawn Mullins, The Thorns, John Waite, and more. He also collaborated with songwriters/producers like Jamie Houston and Charlie Midnight.
He joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls in 2006 as a co-vocalist, principal songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist alongside members Wally Brandt, Seven Williams, and Damon Johnson. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2007, was a hit and earned two Country Top 50 hit singles.
Johnson later joined the popular rock band Aerosmith as keyboards, acoustic guitarist, and backing vocals for their European and North American tours in 2014. Two years later, he played keywords and sang backing vocals for the Whitford-St. Holmes album Reunion.
To this day, this extraordinary talent in music tours with some very popular rock bands like Aerosmith, Perry, and Hollywood Vampires as keyboardists, backing vocals, and acoustic guitarists.
