Leyva is a Cuban-born American actress. She was born in Baracoa, Cuba, and was brought up in The Bronx, New York.

In the interview with Cosmopolitan, when asked about Leyva’s previous knowledge of Santeria, she explained her ethnic background.

“Hey, I’m Cuban-Dominican, with Jamaican and Haitian roots, so that is not foreign to me. My grandmother was this amazing woman in the Dominican Republic who used to read tea leaves and palms,” she said.

Leyva continued saying that her grandmother would cure people in her neighborhood by going into her garden, plucking a couple of leaves, and brewing teas. Her granny was a midwife, so she was very in tune with earth and religion, and a lot of that came with Santeria.

Santeria, which is a syncretic religion that originated in West Africa and developed in Cuba among African slaves and their descendants, is thus also a part of Leyva’s ethnicity.

“I know that my sister wouldn’t be here today with us if she didn’t have the support I gave her and then my family gave her,” she added.

But there were many challenges in the process of understanding and supporting her sister. Leyva opened up about one of the instances to Oprah Daily.

“There were so many instances when I would slip up—calling her ‘Jose’ or referring to her as ‘my brother.’ It was hard to break the habit. And whenever I slipped around her, she would give me a smile and correct me: ‘Um, don’t you mean Marizol?,’” Levya revealed.

So, to get the opportunity to play a Queen, I celebrate that.”
