Sam Rockwell Is the Only Child of His Parents — About His Family

Sam Rockwell is an American actor who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing a cop in Martin McDonagh’s murder thriller Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), and he was nominated again the following year for playing George W. Bush in Adam McKay’s political comedy Vice (2018).

Sam had an interest in acting from a young age because of his family’s involvement in the entertainment industry. It is reported that his parents, Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess, were also actors.

Here is all we know about Sam, his parents, and his career in the entertainment industry.

Sam Rockwell and his parents

Sam was born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California. He does not have any siblings — he is the only child of his parents.

The family moved to New York when he was two years old, living first in the Bronx and later in Manhattan. His parents divorced when he was just five years old.

Regardless, he was raised by both his parents as a family. According to IMDb, he mostly grew up with his father in San Francisco while he spent the summers with his mother in New York.

Sam, not having any siblings and being an only child, was “used to living in his head,” according to The Guardian.

“It’s weird, I don’t get children, I don’t quite understand it. I think being an only child means you learn to live in your own world. It’s a survival thing. I space out quite a lot. People are, like: ‘Where are you, why do you do that?’,” Sam revealed when talking about growing up without siblings and not wanting to have any children.

His childhood was odd and it did not help that his parents were divorced. While talking about how his parents’s roles got reversed in the family by his father mostly raising him, Sam said, “It just worked out that way. My father was more up to the task. That was it. Visiting my mum in the summer – well, that was always a bit jarring.”

It is reported that Sam got his footing in the entertainment industry because of his mother. At the age of ten, he appeared briefly on stage as Humphrey Bogart in an East Village improv comedy routine alongside his mother.

In his family, his mother was a struggling actress. So, to forward her career she also performed singing telegrams. Currently, she works as a painter.

Talking about his mother’s career, Sam told The Guardian, “My mum is a painter now. She quit acting. She paints like a modern Toulouse-Lautrec mixed with Salvador Dali – very out there.”

His father, on the other hand, is quite successful. He is best known for Changeling (2008), Frost/Nixon (2008), and The Club of Unique and Lonely Minds (2015).

He later gave up acting and started working as a graphic designer.

Pete told how proud of a father he was to his son when he left a review on Sam’s movie in a New York Times review. “I loved this movie, and intend to see it again,” he wrote. “My son, Sam, won a Golden Globe for playing Jason Dixon. I think I would still love the movie if another actor had played Dixon…But not quite as much.”

Talking about his family and parents, Sam revealed that he was more like his father. “But I am more similar to my dad. My dad is very supportive; he loves everything I do. When I play the dad in Joshua who is always trying to do the right thing, it’s dedicated to my dad,” he admitted.

All in all, it looks like Sam is very close to his family and his parents.

Sam Rockwell’s career

Sam started high school at the San Francisco School of the Arts, where he met notable peers like Margaret Cho and Aisha Tyler, before graduating from Urban Pioneers, an alternative educational institution that offered an Outward Bound-style approach to learning.

His introduction to the world of acting came at the incredibly early age of 10 when he shared the screen alongside his mother in what would be the first of many appearances.

This early exposure sparked a desire that drove him to hone his craft at the legendary William Esper Studios in New York, where he was mentored by renowned instructor William Esper.

His rise in the entertainment business began with small roles in indie films such as Clownhouse and The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy, which lay the framework for a successful career. Despite being from San Francisco, he found his artistic footing in the busy city of New York, perfecting his craft while navigating the industry’s complexity.

Early accomplishments included cameo appearances on television shows like The Equalizer, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order, as well as minor roles in movies like Last Exit to Brooklyn and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

However, his performance in Tom DiCillo’s Box of Moonlight was a watershed event in his professional trajectory. His depiction as a quirky man-child living in solitude received critical praise, opening the door for more significant parts in the coming years.

This sudden attention culminated in his award-winning performance in Lawn Dogs, in which he played a working-class lawn mower who builds an unexpected friendship with a rich 10-year-old girl living in an upper-class gated neighborhood.

Subsequent parts demonstrated his flexibility as an actor, ranging from the psychotic prisoner William “Wild Bill” Wharton in The Green Mile to the fumbling actor in the science fiction satire Galaxy Quest. He expanded his repertoire by handling Shakespearean adaptations like A Midsummer Night’s Dream and taking on the character of jovial villain Eric Knox in Charlie’s Angels.

However, his role as The Gong Show host Chuck Barris in George Clooney’s directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, cemented his stature as a starring man in Hollywood. This highly lauded performance not only demonstrated his acting abilities but also won him broad exposure and appreciation in the profession.

Despite his success in mainstream movies, he has also pursued independent projects and partnerships with comedic troupes like Stella, solidifying his image as a versatile and dynamic actor. Notable recent performances include his Academy Award-winning performance as racist, bullying police officer Jason Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and his depiction of Bob Fosse in the critically praised miniseries Fosse/Verdon.

Away from the spotlight, he has a significant presence in theater, most notably as a member of the prestigious LAByrinth Theater Company. His return to Broadway in 2022 for a production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo got him a Tony Award nomination, demonstrating his ongoing significance and flexibility across different artistic disciplines.

However, his marital status serves as a clear indication that he is straight — he has been married to two women so far.

So, While his on-screen personas may have fueled speculation about his personal life, separating an actor’s roles from their real-life identities is essential. His dedication to his art should be celebrated rather than used as a basis for assumptions.

Ewan McGregor has portrayed multiple gay characters over the years

Ewan McGregor has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to portraying diverse characters, including several prominent roles, throughout his career.

One of McGregor’s most notable characters was Curt Wild in the 1998 film Velvet Goldmine, directed by Todd Haynes.

In this cult classic, McGregor delivered a captivating performance as a fictionalized version of Iggy Pop, exploring themes of sexuality, identity, and the glam rock scene of the 1970s.

Then, in 2009, he starred opposite Jim Carrey in the dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, playing the real-life character of Phillip Morris, a con man who fell in love with his cellmate.

His portrayal of Morris’s complex journey of self-discovery and his unwavering pursuit of love showcased his ability to bring depth and nuance to a character that could have easily been reduced to caricature.

More recently, in the 2021 limited series Halston, he took on the titular role of the iconic fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, who was openly gay.

His performance captured the designer’s flamboyant persona and his struggles with fame, addiction, and personal relationships, offering a poignant and honest depiction of a trailblazer in the fashion industry.

Additionally, McGregor also portrayed similar character Jerome in the 1996 film The Pillow Book, further demonstrating his versatility and commitment to representing diverse narratives on screen.

Ewan McGregor defended playing a gay character in ‘Halston’

McGregor’s decision to play the iconic fashion designer Halston, who was openly gay, in the Netflix series Halston sparked a discussion about casting and representation in the entertainment industry.

While some argued that gay actors should play gay roles, he defended his choice to take on the part.

He acknowledged the concerns raised by actor Billy Porter, who had previously suggested that straight actors should stop playing gay characters, citing the limited opportunities for LGBTQ+ actors to portray their own lived experiences.

McGregor expressed respect for Porter’s perspective, recognizing that he has not faced the same challenges or discrimination due to his sexuality.

However, he argued that Halston’s sexuality was not the series’ primary focus and that the role was more about portraying the designer’s broader life and career.

He felt comfortable taking on the part because the character’s sexuality was just one aspect of his identity rather than the central narrative.

Ultimately, McGregor’s willingness to engage with the discussion and acknowledge different perspectives emphasizes the importance of considering the specific context of each role rather than adhering to rigid rules that may inadvertently limit artistic expression and representation.

Ewan McGregor got married in the late 90s

In the late 1990s, as McGregor’s career was taking off and he was gaining fame for his roles in films with gay representations, he made a significant personal decision that grounded him amidst the whirlwind of success and the temptations that accompany it.

During those early days of fame, he exuded a self-admitted, confident, almost cocky persona. However, this bravado was balanced by his decision to marry young and start a family.

In 1995, he tied the knot with Eve Mavrakis, a French-Greek production designer he had met while working on a British TV legal drama.

Just five months after the premiere of Trainspotting in 1996, McGregor and Mavrakis welcomed their first child, a daughter named Clara. He fondly recalls having Clara in his lap as a baby while promoting Trainspotting at the Cannes Film Festival.

This early commitment to building a family life alongside his burgeoning career highlights McGregor’s ability to prioritize and balance his personal and professional aspirations and set his gay rumors to rest.

Ewan McGregor is now married to his second wife

McGregor’s personal life took a significant turn in recent years, leading him to marry his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Their relationship blossomed from an on-screen romance to a real-life love story.

In late 2016, McGregor and Winstead met on the set of the FX series Fargo, where they were cast as love interests during the show’s third season.

At the time, both were married to their respective spouses – McGregor to his first wife, Mavrakis, and Winstead to her then-husband, Riley Stearns.

However, as their on-screen chemistry translated into a deep connection off-screen, their marriages eventually ended, paving the way for them to pursue a relationship together.

After nearly four years of dating, he and Winstead took a significant step in solidifying their commitment to one another.

In 2021, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named Laurie. This milestone began a new chapter in their lives as a family. In April 2022, McGregor and Winstead exchanged vows, officially becoming husband and wife the following year.

McGregor’s journey to finding love again with Winstead showcases human relationships’ complexities and unpredictable nature. While his first marriage played a significant role in his life and career, his connection with Winstead blossomed organically from their shared passion for their craft.

The decision to remarry and start a new family with Winstead reflects McGregor’s willingness to embrace change and his openness to new experiences, even in the later stages of his life and career.
