Who Are Alan Cumming’s Parents? He Had a Difficult Relationship with His Father

Alan Cumming turned his traumatic life experience into a lesson.

Know Alan Cumming’s Parents And Relationship With His Father

Alan Cumming had a very toxic relationship with his father.

He was born on January 27, 1965, to his mother, Mary Darling, and his father, Alex Cumming. Mary was a secretary for an insurance company, and Alex was Panmure Estate’s chief forester.

Alex died in late 2010 from cancer, and after his death, Alan released his book, Not My Father’s Son: A Family Memoir, on May 5, 2015. There, he wrote about his childhood, his parents, and his relationship with his father.

Here is everything we know about Alan’s turbulent relationship with his father, Alex.

Alan Cumming’s relationship with his father

Alan discussed his father’s mental and physical abuse of him as a youngster in his memoir, Not My Father’s Son. His parents were financially stable, but his mother could not secure a divorce until she became financially independent.

The actor has often discussed how he felt about his relationship with his father in interviews. For instance, he confessed that the abuse he felt was “very violent” on  Desert Island Discs.

The trauma was so bad that he thought he would die at the hands of his father. He added how he could not tell when Alex would be violent to him.

Alex used to assign his kids difficult physical activities above their skills. He did so without instructions to ridicule and punish them for their inevitable failure.

When Alan’s brother, Tom, departed the house, their father’s explosive, illogical rage fell on Alan. Moreover, Alex was obsessed with Alan’s appearance and hair.

The actor said, “Often it would be to do with my appearance or my hair. He was obsessed with my hair. When I would go to get my hair cut as an adult, I would vomit.”

One evening, Alex hauled the actor out to a shed, held him down, and shaved his head with dull, rusted clippers meant for shearing sheep. Alan returned to school the next day with a wounded scalp and swollen, puffy eyes from sobbing.

He lied to his teacher and told them he had unintentionally tipped creosote over his head while attempting to trim his hair. Alan wrote in his book, “Every night, getting off the school bus, walking through the gates of the estate, past the sawmill yard where my father reigned, and towards our house was like a lottery. ‘Would he be home yet?’ ‘What mood would he be in?”

Alan stated that he did not communicate with his father from his early twenties until right before the production of his Who Do You Think You Are? episode. The actor went to the show because Alex did not believe the actor and his brother to be his biological son.

But eventually, Alan and Tom performed DNA tests, which confirmed they were Alex’s biological offspring. Even though Alan had to endure a lot of trauma as a kid, he did not let it break his spirits.

He stated that his traumatic childhood taught him how to act by requiring him to suppress his emotions and sentiments around his father when he was younger.

He said, “My dad didn’t break my spirit. I feel that the qualities you need to deal with someone who is an adult who is abusing you, and you are powerless, are good qualities for being an actor.”
