Aaron Taylor-Johnson is Shocked by Netizens’ Reaction to His Age Gap With Wife Sam Taylor-Johnson

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s relationship with his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson, is one of the most controversial relationships in Hollywood.

Aaron met Sam on the production of their film Nowhere Boy in 2009, when he was 18 and she was 42. The couple began dating and married on June 21, 2012, in the chapel at Babington House. 

They have two kids, and Aaron is the stepfather to Sam’s two girls from her previous marriage. At the time of writing, Aaron is 33 years old whereas his wife is 57 years old.

They have an age gap of 24 years, which netizens find bizarre. However, Aaron does not see anything wrong with his and Sam’s relationship.

Aaron talked about his relationship and age gap with Sam in a March 2024 interview with Rolling Stone.

He revealed that he did not understand the public’s fascination with his relationship. He said, “What you gotta realize is that what most people were doing in their 20s, I was doing when I was 13.”

“You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me,” he added.

This is not the first time the couple has addressed their age gap. Back in 2017, Sam talked about it in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

She said that her current marriage is working a lot better than her previous one. She was previously married to art dealer and gallerist Jay Jopling. The two were married from 1997 to 2008 and have two daughters —  one born in 1997 and another in 2005.

“If I gave a second thought to other people, I would be the unhappiest person, probably still in a miserable marriage,” she explained. “People like to talk about it. I’m like, ‘Yeah, but it works better than my last marriage. It’s lasted longer than a lot of my friends’ marriages.’”

Many have accused Sam of grooming Aaron since she is 24 years older than him. However, the couple has not let the public opinion of their relationship budge them.

Relationship compared with the case of Mary Kay Letourneau

Many netizens have compared Aaron’s relationship with his wife to the 2023 movie, May December and the case of Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau.

Directed by Todd Haynes, May December is loosely inspired by Letourneau and Fualau’s relationship. It stars Natalie Portman as an actress named Elizabeth Berry who travels to meet and study the life of the controversial woman, Julianne Moore’s character, Gracie Atherton-Yoo.

In May-December, Berry is set to play in a film about a woman infamous for the 23-year-long relationship with her husband that began when he was 13 years old. 

Talking about the case of Letourneau, she was a teacher who pled guilty in 1997 to two charges of felony second-degree rape of a minor, making her a sex offender.

Letourneau was 34 years old when she began sexually abusing the youngster, Fualaau, who was 12 years old. He was a sixth-grade student at Burien Elementary School in Washington. 

While awaiting punishment, she gave birth to Fualaau’s daughter. With the state seeking a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence, she negotiated a plea arrangement that included six months in imprisonment with three months suspended and no contact with Fualaau for life, among other conditions. 

Shortly after Letourneau had served three months in prison, authorities apprehended her in a vehicle with Fualaau. A court overturned her plea deal and returned the maximum seven-and-a-half-year jail term permitted by statute. 

Eight months after returning to prison, she gave birth to Fualaau’s second child, a girl. She was in jail from 1998 until 2004.

Eventually, Letourneau and Fualaau married in May 2005. Fualaau filed for divorce from Letourneau on May 9, 2017, nearly 12 years after they married, but he later withdrew the case.

As of April 2018, Fualaau worked at a home improvement business and as a professional DJ, while Letourneau was employed as a legal assistant. 

A source talked about their relationship with People and said, “They know what everyone thinks about their relationship, and they don’t care. They really never have. The wrong stuff that happened was so long ago. They are two grown adults who are living their lives now.”

However, their relationship did not work out. In August 2019, the couple formalized their legal separation.

Earlier in the marriage, Fualaau said he was not a victim and was proud of his partnership. According to People in May 2020, an unidentified person close to Fualaau stated that “he sees things clearly now, and he realizes that this wasn’t a healthy relationship, from the start.”

Looking at Letourneau and Fualaau’s relationship, many have drawn parallels with Aaron’s relationship with his wife. However, since Aaron and Sam believe that their relationship is not wrong, everything said by the netizens falls on deaf ears.
