Some have also theorized that Schilling helped James in The Unabomber case. People think so due to the storyline of the 2017 Discovery Channel miniseries titled Manhunt: Unabomber, where a character named Natalie Rogers helps the character of James.

So, when the TV show aired, netizens wondered if James’ real-life girlfriend-turned-fiance was the same Natalie portrayed in the show. However, that wasn’t the truth, as James revealed that there was no one named Natalie when he worked on the case.

He also revealed that the character of Natalie Rogers was fictional, but the character was indeed inspired by his fiance. “Natalie was the inspiration behind the character Natalie Rogers in the series,” James wrote in his .

Returning back to their relationship, James and Schilling finally walked down the aisle and shared the wedding vows on April 1, 2023, after being in a relationship as well as engaged for several years.

The former FBI agent his wedding via his Facebook page on April 8, 2023, a week after they officially tied the knot. He posted a picture with his wife and wrote, “Guess what today is? My one-week anniversary!”

“Great news! My partner in (solving) crime, Natalie Schilling, and I got married last week! Yay! Nick and Nora…watch out!” he concluded his caption. After the announcement, friends and family congratulated the newlyweds in the comment section.

After less than two months, on June 1, James took to the comment section of the same post and mentioned that he and his partner were celebrating two month anniversary. “Thanks, everyone, for the kind words. It’s our 2-month anniversary today. Yay!” he wrote as a comment.

On January 27, 2018, James finally replied to a Twitter user with the same query and revealed that he and his then-wife got a divorce after The Unabomber was caught. He said that it was sad and difficult for them and their children.

Speaking of James and Ellie’s kids, they are blessed with three children named Sean, Dan, and Ryan Fitzgerald. According to James’ Facebook post in November 2020, Ryan served as a medic in the NJ Army National Guard for three years, including a year deployment to Qatar.

Similarly, Dan is now married to his girlfriend Meredith. And thanks to Dan’s marriage, James is now a grandfather of two granddaughters: Brynn Aoife Fitzgerald (b. August 18, 2017) and Maeve Patricia Fitzgerald (b. July 2019). Currently, details about Sean are unknown.
