The young actress was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on December 31, 1998, to Katy and Mac Schafer. She grew up as the oldest child of the family, followed by two sisters and a brother.

The star remained a boy and did not acknowledge her confusion regarding her gender until she was seven. That was the first time she came out as a gay boy. By the time she was in ninth grade, the American model identified herself as a trans woman.

Unfortunately, the transformations within herself led to difficulty in dealing with gender identity amidst a dysphoria diagnosis.

The gender identity confusion did not last long because she eventually became the youngest name listed as a plaintiff in the ACLU’s lawsuit, Carcaño v. McCrory, against North Carolina’s bill HB2, which was against the rights of people from the LGBTQ+ community.

She got listed for Teen Vogue’s Top 21 under 21 after her activism, which also helped her be granted an interview with the famous political figure Hilary Clinton. 

In 2017, she also graduated from the High School Visual Arts program at the North Carolina School of the Arts. 

Before being a part of the HBO series Euphoria, she had planned to attend Central Saint Martins, an arts college in London, England. The actress never got to do so since her appearance in the show occupied her time, and later, she had to focus mostly on her career.

She made a statement saying, “I do like people to know that I’m not a cis girl because that’s not something that I am or feel like I am. I’m proud to be a trans person.” 

The American actress likes to describe herself as “bisexual or pansexual”. And, for those who don’t understand, the young model says she is “closer to what you might call a lesbian.”
