The musician band MUNA exemplifies their unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community by prioritizing the commemoration of Pride Month, even amidst their demanding schedule.

On June 1, 2023, MUNA performed on the stage at New York City’s historic Stonewall Inn. Their performance was a significant part of the annual Pride kick-off event presented by Jägermeister, symbolizing MUNA’s steadfast support and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community.

Likewise, their performance added significance due to the backdrop of over 490 bills currently being considered by the U.S. government, specifically targeting LGBTQ+ rights.

The organizers also intentionally booked MUNA for the show, recognizing the importance of their presence and message in the face of these challenging circumstances.

After their impactful performance, MUNA member Naomi McPherson expressed to People, “What better and more iconic way to ring in the month than by doing this?”

McPherson also noted that Pride month felt different this year, expressing, “It’s jarring to think about our journey over the past 10 years and how much more dystopian things have gotten for queer people.”

Similarly, Stacy Lentz, co-owner of the bar and CEO of its nonprofit organization, the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, stated, “It’s really important for the younger generation to understand what happened here in 1969 at Stonewall. We could have those rights taken away.”

He added, “That’s why it was important to get an up-and-coming, amazing, top-notch young group with so many followers out there that people love to come and perform at this event. We’re raising awareness about this horrific legislation that’s happening.”

Moreover, MUNA recently concluded a nationwide tour supporting their self-titled 2022 album, with a significant number of their shows taking place in states where LGBTQ+ individuals are facing targeted legislation.

However, band member Katie Galvin noted that audiences had shown remarkable resilience despite the legislative bullying and targeted harm faced by many queer people outside of concert venues.

Galvin also recognized the unfortunate reality of individuals being displaced from their communities. She mentioned the heart-wrenching situations in states like Texas, where families are being torn apart, and children are being separated from parents who support their transitions.

In agreement with their bandmate, McPherson acknowledged that a significant portion of their audience comprises open-minded and dedicated younger fans. They expressed optimism that, with this generation, an artist’s queerness would become inconsequential in determining their mainstream appeal.

McPherson also strongly emphasizes the significance of queer individuals finding community. He highlighted the importance of building systems of care that will provide support during challenging times.

After their performance at the Stonewall Inn, MUNA resumed their touring duties alongside Swift on the Eras Tour. On June 4, 2023, they delighted their Chicago hometown with a show. The band eagerly anticipates future tour stops in Ohio, Missouri, and Colorado, as the entire experience has been an absolute blast for them.

Furthermore, reflecting on the Stonewall Inn event, member Josette Maskin shared her admiration, stating, “Watching the Taylor show is a lesson in being the best musician alive.”

Maskin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness and perform alongside Swift, emphasizing the warm reception from Taylor’s fans, who have been incredibly gracious.
