James Charles, social media sensation and makeup artist, recently attempted to recreate Doja Cat‘s iconic Met Gala 2023 look.

He shared a tutorial video on his Instagram on May 4, 2023, attempting to transform himself into a cat resembling Doja with the caption, “Tried my best to recreate @dojacat‘s Met Gala makeup.”

Charles started by applying prosthetics on his nose and forehead to create a cat-like shape and arranged them. He then used foundation and contour to define his facial structure and applied concealer to brighten certain areas of his face.

Next, he set his face with powder to achieve a matte effect. He proceeded to add blush and eyeliner to give his eyes a cat-like appearance, then applied mascara.

Charles used foundation on his lips and added whiskers above his upper lip. He showed off his look by mimicking a cat, pawing with his hand, and vaping at the end.

Unfortunately for James, the results didn’t quite live up to expectations, and he faced backlash from fans. One of the fans commented, “Why do you look more like the girls in LA than a cat….”

While another pointed, “Looks like a tiny nut sack hanging from the nose piece lmaoooo.”

As a whole, Charles’s transformation look didn’t match Doja’s Met Gala look.

Doja Cat’s transformation was an interesting journey

At the Met Gala 2023, Doja Cat made her first-ever appearance, and she did it in style by channeling Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette.

According to her creative director and stylist, Brett Alan Nelson, no one could have pulled off the look better than Doja.

Nelson and the artist spent six months collaborating with Oscar de La Renta co-creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia to create Doja’s completely hand-beaded gown, featuring a face-framing hood with a pair of cat ears.

The rapper had the idea of incorporating prosthetics into her beauty routine to pay homage to Choupette in an elegant way. Nelson reached out to prosthetic artist Malina Stearns who cast her face for a molding about two months ago, perfecting the shape of the sculpture over time.

“She wanted to be a cat herself, as like a humanoid kind of cat,” Ms. Stearns said to NY Times.

To ensure the look read “more beauty, less costume,” makeup artist Ernesto Casillas kept a light hand. He wanted the makeup to read feline but still soft and pretty, so he did a thin and delicate cat-inspired eyeliner using Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick liquid eyeliner.

He also matched her lip color to her faux nose using Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk collection on lips and cheeks.

In addition to the beauty aspects, Doja was adorned with diamonds from Messika, and French artist and designer Erté inspired the jewel on her third eye.

There’s a million-dollar diamond in the middle of her forehead, says Nelson, and it’s the most significant art moment of the year.

James Charles’s collaboration with Doja Cat

Charles is no stranger to Doja, they have collaborated several times. In December 2020, Doja Cat appeared as a guest on James Charles’ YouTube channel for a makeup tutorial video.

The two discussed various topics while Charles did Doja’s makeup, including their shared love for singing and performing. The video received millions of views and positive feedback from their fans.

Later on, in February 2021, Doja Cat posted a TikTok video featuring Charles, in which they danced and lip-synced to her song ‘Streets.’ The video quickly went viral and amassed millions of views.

Their most recent collaboration occurred in April 2021, when James Charles did Doja Cat’s makeup for her music video for ‘Kiss Me More’ featuring SZA. The video features stunning and colorful makeup looks on Doja, which were done by Charles himself.

Fans have praised their collaborations for their creativity and entertainment value, as well as their ability to bring together two influential figures in their respective industries.
