Johnson’s career began when she was six years old when she portrayed Chrissy Seaver on the comedy Growing Pains from 1990 to 1992. Johnson has been in eight television shows before the age of 12. 

She then played Chrissy again in The Growing Pains Movie and The Growing Pains: Return of the Seavers. She portrayed the rebellious younger sister of a budding teenage tennis player in the one-season series Phenom

She also participated in the one-season sitcom All-American Girl, which aired in 1994. She starred as Gracie Wallace in the ABC comedy Maybe This Time from 1995 to 1996.

In 2012, she played Beth, the waitress who is saved by Captain America in The Avengers. Johnson’s roles as a voice actress included Sean in the US dub of The First Snow of Winter, Gretchen Grundler on Disney’s Recess, Terra in the second and fifth seasons of Teen Titans, Jinmay on Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, and Gwen Tennyson on Ben 10: Alien Force and future Ben 10 franchise versions.

She had a significant vocal part when she delivered the voice and motion capture for Ellie in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful PlayStation action-adventure game The Last of Us.

For her part in the game, she received a BAFTA for Best Performer in a Video Game and a VGX Award for Best Voice Actress. On March 12, 2015, she received another BAFTA for Best Performance for the same part in The Last of Us: Left Behind, the game’s downloadable DLC.

Johnson resumed her role as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II in 2020. She was nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2020 and Best Performer in a Leading Role at the 2020 BAFTA Gaming Awards for her performance.
