Rice was born to a director father, Jeremy Rice, and a writer mother, Kate Rice, in Sydney, Australia. Her parents named her after the place where her grandmother lived, Angourie, New South Wales.

Kate and Jeremy married each other in 2000, a year before their daughter was born. The writer’s mom had written the series Castaway and Trapped. Besides this, she also acted in several series.
