McGregor’s dedication to his craft was evident in his preparation for the iconic role of a heroin addict in the critically acclaimed film Trainspotting. 

Determined to embody the character authentically, he underwent a significant transformation, shedding over 25 pounds.

His approach to weight loss was surprisingly simple yet effective. He adopted a disciplined diet, eschewing beer and dairy products, and instead opted for grilled foods, wine, and gin. 

This shift in his eating and drinking habits, coupled with his unwavering commitment, allowed him to shed the necessary pounds to portray the emaciated physicality of a heroin addict convincingly.

His determination to prove himself as the right choice for the role was unwavering. With an upcoming project, The Pillow Book (1996) for director Peter Greenaway, he meticulously planned his dietary regimen, ensuring he achieved weight loss.

In an interview with Neon Magazine, he candidly shared his simple yet effective strategy: “I grilled everything and stopped drinking beer. I drank wine and lots of gin instead. The weight just falls off.”

Like his transformation in Trainspotting, he changed for the third season of the critically acclaimed series Fargo, a testament to his dedication as an actor. 

In this season, he took on the challenging task of portraying two contrasting brothers, Emmit and Ray Stussy.

For the role of Ray Stussy, he underwent a substantial physical transformation, gaining weight to portray the balding, overweight, and constantly struggling brother. 

This was no small feat, especially considering that he had just completed filming for Trainspotting 2, a role that required him to be in peak physical condition.

Instead, he embarked on an intentional weight gain journey, indulging in a diet rich in carbohydrates and french fries, as he humorously admitted, “I didn’t have any technique other than eating a lot.”

While his weight gain was crucial for portraying Ray’s physicality, it posed a challenge for his portrayal of Emmit, the slimmer and more polished brother. 

To overcome this obstacle, he donned Spanx. This form-fitting undergarment helped him maintain an upright and leaner posture, effectively distinguishing Emmit’s physical presence from Ray’s.

McGregor’s commitment to embodying the iconic character of Obi-Wan Kenobi for the Disney+ series has extended beyond acting, as evidenced by his yet another impressive physical transformation under the guidance of legendary fitness trainer Tony Horton.

In a photo shared by Horton on his Instagram, he can be seen flexing his bulging biceps and showcasing a well-defined v-taper while wearing a tank top that reads “Run Hungry, Taste Victory.” 

Despite wearing a mask, his beaming smile is unmistakable, reflecting his pride and satisfaction in his remarkable progress.

Horton, the creator of the renowned P90X fitness program, accompanied the photo with a message praising his dedication to his fitness journey. “It seems that this Scottish fellow is starting to lean up and slim down. 

He hasn’t missed a day, and his diet has been spot on. This was day 16,” Horton wrote, highlighting the actor’s unwavering commitment and disciplined approach to training and nutrition.

While the specifics of his training regimen under Horton’s guidance remain unclear, it is likely a variation of the P90X program, incorporating short rest periods, constant movement, and a clean, balanced diet. 

With the guidance of Tony Horton’s expertise and the rigorous P90X program, he has undergone a remarkable transformation, ensuring that his portrayal of the legendary Jedi Master will be as compelling physically as it is in his acting prowess.

McGregor has a unique approach to maintaining his physical fitness. Despite his aversion to conventional gym routines involving free weights, circuit training, and treadmills, which he finds tedious, he prefers outdoor activities better.

Central to his fitness regimen is running. He considers a five-mile run his standard routine, but he sometimes challenges himself by extending it to eight miles. 

During these outdoor jogs, he finds solace in the music of iconic bands such as Pink Floyd and Muse, particularly the latter’s album “Absolution,” which he finds uplifting and energizing.
